DIY Gel Manicure Guide
How to Apply Semi-Cured Gel Nail Strips at Home
A Beginner's Guide
Want gorgeous, glossy gel nails at home without spending hours painting them? Meet your new manicure shortcut: peachy bae semi-cured gel nail strips.
If you've never used them before, don't worry. They're much easier than they sound.
Unlike traditional gel polish, there's no need to paint multiple layers. And unlike press-on nails, you're not applying a full artificial nail over your natural nail.
With semi-cured gel nail strips, you get a ready-to-apply gel design that goes directly onto your natural nails and is finished under a UV LED nail lamp.
That's it. Here's exactly how to apply semi-cured gel nail strips at home, even if you're trying them for the very first time.
What You'll Need
Good news: you don't need a drawer full of manicure tools to get started. Your Peachy Bae order comes with everything you need for your at-home gel manicure:
- Semi-cured gel nail strips
- Mini UV LED nail lamp
- Nail file
- Cuticle pusher
- Alcohol prep pad
The only thing you'll need to keep handy is a nail cutter or nail scissors to trim the excess strip.
That's it. No salon-sized toolkit, no complicated setup. Just open your peachy bae kit, prep your nails, and you're ready for your DIY gel mani. 💅
Your kit. Your lamp. Your mani.
The 8 Steps
Prep Your Nails
This step might not be the most exciting, but it's probably the most important.
Start with clean, completely dry nails. Remove any old nail polish and make sure there is no cream, oil or residue left on your nails. You can use a nail cleanser or alcohol wipe to clean the nail surface.
If your cuticles are covering part of your nail, gently push them back using a cuticle stick or pusher.
Why does nail prep matter?
Your gel nail strips need a clean, dry surface to adhere properly. Oil and moisture can make it harder for the strip to stick and can contribute to lifting.
Clean nails = better application = better wear.
Choose the Right Gel Nail Strip
Your set will contain multiple strip sizes, so find the one that best matches each nail. Place the strip over your nail to check the fit before peeling it off.
Ideally, the strip should cover the nail without touching your skin or cuticles.
What if you're between two sizes?
Go with the slightly smaller option. You want the gel strip to sit on your nail, rather than overlapping onto your skin. This small detail can make a big difference to how neatly your manicure wears.
Peel Off the Strip
Once you've found the right size, carefully peel the strip away from its backing. Try not to touch the adhesive side too much with your fingers. The less you handle the sticky surface, the better.
And remember, your gel strips are designed to remain flexible before they're fully cured, so handle them gently.
Place the Gel Strip on Your Nail
Now comes the satisfying part. Position the strip on your natural nail, leaving a small gap between the strip and your cuticle. Don't place the strip directly onto your skin.
Once it's positioned correctly, gently press it down starting from the centre and moving towards the sides. Smooth the strip over your nail to remove any air bubbles or wrinkles. Pay special attention to the sides and the area near the cuticle.
🍑 Peachy tip
Don't rush this step. If the strip isn't sitting correctly, gently lift it and reposition it before you cure it. It's much easier to fix the placement now than after curing.
Smooth Down the Edges
Once the strip is sitting nicely on your nail, press down the edges firmly. You can use your finger or a cuticle stick to make sure the strip is properly adhered around the sides.
Make sure there are no lifted edges, folds or bubbles. The strip should sit smoothly against your natural nail.
Remove the Excess
Depending on the length of your natural nails and the size of the strip, there may be some excess gel extending beyond the tip. You can gently fold it over the edge of your nail and cut off the excess using a nail scissor or nail cutter.
Don't worry about getting the shape perfect just yet — you'll have a chance to perfect it after curing.
Cure Your Gel Nail Strips
This is what turns your flexible gel strip into your finished manicure. Place your hand under your peachy bae UV LED nail lamp and cure the strips according to the specific instructions provided with your product.
Once cured, the gel should feel firm and your manicure should have that glossy gel finish.
Why do gel nail strips need to be cured?
Semi-cured gel nail strips have already been partially cured, which is why they remain flexible enough to apply. Curing them under a UV LED lamp completes the curing process and hardens the gel.
File and Shape Your Nails
Almost there. 💅 Once your strips are cured, use your nail file to shape the free edge of your nails. File gently until you get the shape and length you want.
Take your time around the corners and edges so you get a clean finish.
And then... you're done.
How Long Does It Take to Apply Gel Nail Strips?
Once you get the hang of it, applying gel nail strips at home can be surprisingly quick. Your first application might take a little longer because you're figuring out the right sizes and getting comfortable with the process.
After a few applications, the routine becomes much faster:
No waiting for layers of polish to dry. No worrying about smudging your freshly painted nails. Just a fresh mani whenever you want one.
How to Make Your Gel Nail Strips Last Longer
A good application starts with good prep, but a few habits can help your manicure stay looking fresh.
Keep your nails dry during application
Make sure your nails are completely dry before applying the strips.
Don't apply strips onto your skin
Keep the gel strip on the nail plate and away from your cuticles and surrounding skin.
Press down the edges properly
Make sure the sides and tip are firmly adhered before curing.
Follow the curing instructions
Don't guess the curing time. Always follow the instructions provided with your specific gel strips and lamp.
Be kind to your nails
Avoid using your nails as tools. Your manicure is cute; it is not a bottle opener. 😉
Common Mistakes to Avoid
Applying semi-cured gel nail strips is easy, but a few common mistakes can affect your results.
✕ Applying onto oily nails
Moisturiser, cuticle oil and natural oils can interfere with adhesion.
Fix: Clean your nails thoroughly before application.
✕ Choosing a strip that's too wide
A strip that overlaps onto your skin or cuticle can lift more easily.
Fix: Choose the closest size that sits entirely on your nail.
✕ Leaving bubbles underneath
Air bubbles can prevent the strip from sitting flat.
Fix: Smooth the strip from the centre outward and press down the edges.
✕ Skipping the curing step
Semi-cured gel strips need to be fully cured according to the product instructions.
Fix: Use a peachy bae mini UV LED nail lamp and follow the recommended curing time.
✕ Peeling or picking at your manicure
If your manicure starts lifting, don't pull it off.
Fix: Follow the product's recommended removal instructions instead.
